What Originality.ai and ThesisDraft Are

Originality.ai is an AI-detection and content-integrity tool aimed at publishers, SEO agencies and anyone paying freelancers to write. It bundles AI detection with plagiarism scanning, readability and fact-checking features, runs on a credit system, and supports team accounts. It has also done more public benchmarking than most of its competitors, including studies versioned against specific models.

ThesisDraft’s AI check serves one person with one document. Free for the first 1,500 words, no account, no name; €4.99 once for a full thesis with 14 days of re-checks; and a measured false-positive rate printed next to every verdict.

Web Content Is Not Thesis Prose

This is the substantive difference, and it is easy to miss because both tools return a percentage that looks the same.

A detector learns what machine text looks like relative to the human text it was shown. If that human text is blog posts, product pages and marketing copy, the model’s idea of “human” is loose, varied, informal writing. Academic prose is none of those things. It is deliberately uniform, it uses conventional transitions because the convention exists, it repeats terminology on purpose rather than reaching for synonyms, and in Germany it is usually written in the author’s second language.

Every one of those properties pushes a text toward the machine end of a general-purpose detector. That is not speculation about a competitor’s model — it is the mechanism behind the published finding that detectors falsely flag a majority of non-native English writers, and it is the mechanism that broke our own detector once.

An early version of ours scored an AUC of 0.184 against 236 pre-2022 arXiv abstracts, worse than a coin flip, because a family of lexical-richness features was running backwards: it scored dense human academic prose as machine-like. Those features now carry zero weight. We found it by testing against academic text specifically, which is the only way that failure is visible.

The False-Positive Rate

Measured 9 August 2026, on academic documents published before ChatGPT existed:

  • English over 400 words — about 3 false positives in 100.
  • English under 400 words — about 2 in 100.
  • German over 400 words — about 4 in 100.
  • German under 400 words — no high-probability verdict is issued.

Stated limits, published in the same place: long-form results are in-sample and therefore optimistic; the AI corpora are 20–25 documents from two model families; the German long-form corpus is Wikipedia prose, which is formal and verifiably human but not the register a student writes in. The corpora and the scripts are on the accuracy page.

What Originality.ai Does Better

  • It publishes benchmarks at all. Model-versioned studies and open comparisons put it well ahead of most of the category, and we would rather say that than pretend the whole field is opaque.
  • Plagiarism scanning against a real index, which we do not offer.
  • Team and workflow features — scan history, multiple seats, API — for anyone checking other people’s writing at volume.
  • Breadth. One tool for detection, plagiarism, readability and fact-checking across many content types.

Credits vs One Payment

Credits are the right model for continuous use: an agency scanning fifty articles a month wants a meter. They are the wrong model for a thesis. You will check a full document perhaps three or four times in the final two weeks, and then never again.

So it is €4.99, once, and it includes 14 days of unlimited re-checks — enough to run the check, rewrite the passages you did not like, and run it again without watching a balance. The free 1,500 words come first, with no account, so you can see how the tool reads your writing before deciding anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Originality.ai good for academic writing?

It was built to help publishers and agencies check whether freelance writers used AI, and its models are tuned on that kind of text. Academic prose is a different register — denser, more formulaic by convention, and often written by non-native speakers. A detector's error rate is not a constant across registers, so a figure measured on web content does not transfer to a thesis.

Does Originality.ai publish accuracy figures?

It publishes more benchmark material than most detectors, including model-versioned studies and comparisons, which is genuinely better practice than the industry norm. What is still missing across the industry is a false-positive rate stated next to the verdict a user actually receives, on the kind of text that user is submitting.

How much does Originality.ai cost?

It uses a credit system, sold as one-off packs or monthly plans, with credits consumed per hundred words scanned. That suits an agency scanning steadily all month. A student needs a handful of full-document checks in one fortnight, which is why ours is a single €4.99 payment with 14 days of unlimited re-checks.

Do I need an account for ThesisDraft's AI check?

No. The first 1,500 words are free with no account and no name. We never ask for your name, university, supervisor or matriculation number, and payment identity is kept in a separate system from anything you upload.
